Frequently asked questions
The short answers to what students actually ask us. If yours is not here, write to us and a person will reply.
The basics
What is Wylfred, exactly?
Wylfred is a scholarship matching tool. You build a profile once, we compare it against the scholarships we track at Canadian colleges and universities, and you get the ones that actually fit. No spreadsheet, no forty open tabs. We do not hand out scholarships ourselves and we are not affiliated with the institutions. Wylfred is built by Lexya, the Québec company behind the student discounts and contests you may already know.
Is Wylfred free?
Yes. Matching is free for students and there is no card to enter. Paid features may come later, but finding your scholarships is the part that stays free. Advertising is what pays for it, which is why you will see the occasional ad on the platform.
Who can use Wylfred?
Students who study, or plan to study, at a Canadian college or university. You do not need to be admitted anywhere yet to build a profile.
How long does it take to set up?
About five minutes. The first questions cover your program, level and institution, and everything after that is optional. You can skip sections and come back later. The only cost of skipping is that an unanswered question is a scholarship we cannot check for you.
How matching works
How does Wylfred know which scholarships fit me?
In two passes. Hard criteria get checked mechanically: level of study, program, institution, province, citizenship. Then AI reads the eligibility wording, which is where most scholarships hide their real conditions. You get a short list with the reasoning attached, so you can see why something matched instead of taking our word for it.
Does a match mean I am eligible?
No, and we would rather be blunt about it. A match means your profile lines up with the criteria as we read them. The organization giving the scholarship is the only one who decides eligibility, and their conditions can change without telling us. Check the official page before you invest hours in an application. Every scholarship in Wylfred links to it.
I am only seeing a few matches. Why?
Usually an incomplete profile. An empty field cannot be matched, and things like your GPA, volunteering, financial situation and background unlock entire categories of awards. Filling the optional sections is the fastest fix. It is also possible your program and level simply have a thin year, and new scholarships arrive as we track more institutions.
A result looks wrong. Can a human check it?
Yes. Matching is automated, but it does not get the last word and you are never stuck with it. Write to us and someone will review your case. Québec's Law 25 gives you the right to have an automated result reviewed by a person, and we honour it.
Scholarships and applying
Which scholarships are in Wylfred?
Scholarships, bursaries and awards at Canadian colleges and universities, institution by institution. You can browse the full index by institution. We add institutions continuously and re-check amounts and deadlines, but we cannot promise a catalogue is complete or perfectly current. The official page always wins over what you see here.
Do I apply in Wylfred or on the organization's site?
On the organization's site, in most cases. Wylfred finds the scholarship, tells you what it wants and when it closes, then sends you to the official form. We do not collect your transcripts or your letters. A few opportunities do run inside Wylfred, and those say so clearly.
Does Wylfred help me write my application?
It coaches you, it does not write for you. Wylfred pulls together what the funder is actually asking for, points out which parts of your profile are your strongest argument, flags the gaps worth fixing, and reviews what you have drafted. The words stay yours, and that matters, because a selection committee can tell.
Are some scholarships sponsored?
Sometimes, and they are always labelled. An organization can pay for priority placement, which affects where a scholarship appears, never whether you are eligible for it. A sponsored placement is not a recommendation from us. The criteria stay the funder's.
Your data
What do you do with the information in my profile?
We use it to match you with scholarships, to tell you about the deadlines you asked to hear about, and to make the matching better. We do not sell it. Our servers are in Canada. Parts of your profile go to the AI providers we use, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, to generate results, under contracts covering how they handle it. The privacy policy names all of them.
Is my profile shared with universities or funders?
Not without your say-so, case by case. We may partner with organizations that offer scholarships, and if sharing your profile is ever part of that, we ask you before anything moves. Silence is not consent, so an unchecked box means nothing gets shared.
Why do you ask about ethnicity, disability or Indigenous identity?
Because a lot of funding is reserved for specific communities and situations, and we cannot match you to it without knowing. Every one of those questions is optional, and skipping them does not limit your access to the platform. When you do answer, the answer is used for eligibility on those awards and nothing else. Law 25 treats this as sensitive information, and so do we.
Can I delete my account and my data?
Yes, whenever you want, with no explanation owed. You can edit or delete profile details yourself from your account, or ask us to close it, and your data is deleted within 30 days. You can also ask for a copy of what we hold, have it corrected, or withdraw your consent. Section 11 of the privacy policy lists every right and how to use it.
